In this fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the small joys that bring us true happiness. But what if I told you that by embracing creativity and exploring the wisdom of Rumi, you could unlock a world of healing, self-discovery, and boundless creativity? Join me on a transformative journey as we delve into the Rumi’s teaching that inspire art, literature and creativity in general.
I’m a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) and I’ve been tangling for years. In a conversation with my friend Fatima Razi, who wanted to create a journal around Rumi’s quotes, I found her excitement to be contagious. I’ve since been feeling inspired to include this sense of oneness and inner peace of Rumi’s teachings in into my own work. Zentangles in themselves can be incredibly therapeutic. So I decided to soak in some Rumi wisdom and just create!
1. The Power of Small Things:
In the grand tapestry of life, it's the tiniest threads that hold the most significance. Just like Rumi once said, "Sometimes it's the smallest things that take up the most room in our hearts." Through the mesmerizing art of Zentangles, we discover how intricate patterns and delicate strokes can bring immense joy and a sense of inner peace. These small acts of creativity become a gateway to a world of endless possibilities.
2. Rumi's Quotes as Catalysts:
Rumi, the mystical poet, offers profound insights that touch the depths of our souls. His words resonate with timeless wisdom and serve as powerful catalysts for self-reflection and healing. By incorporating Rumi's quotes into our Zentangle practice, we infuse each stroke with intention and meaning, creating a harmonious blend of art and spirituality.
Rumi’s all embracing love has set the stage for both art, prose and especially poetry. Here’s one that I really love:
“Creatures are cups. The sciences and the arts and all branches of knowledge are inscriptions around the outside of the cups. When a cup shatters, the writing can no longer be read. The wine's the thing! The wine that's held in the mold of these physical cups. Drink the wine and know what lasts and what to love. The man who truly asks must be sure of two things: One, that he's mistaken in what he's doing or thinking now. And two, that there is a wisdom he doesn't know yet. Asking is half of knowing.”
3. Healing through Art:
Art has an incredible capacity to heal wounds, both seen and unseen. As we immerse ourselves in the meditative process of creating Rumi-inspired Zentangles, we embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and healing. With each deliberate pen stroke, we release emotional burdens, find solace in the present moment, and reconnect with our inner selves.
4. Inspired Creativity:
Rumi once said, "Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray." With Rumi's words as our guide, we tap into the wellspring of our creativity. Zentangles become the canvas for our imagination to run wild, allowing us to embrace our artistic potential and discover new depths of self-expression. It reflects in our stories, in our poetry and our words. So think about this oneness and harmony when you create characters and settings. Really get to know your story before you tell it.
Here’s something Fatima wrote for one of her books as her female protagonist embraces her own demons. It was inspired by the Rumi’s quote "This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet."
“What a beautiful charade. I had never lived until I had lived in those skies. With blood, bone and sinew that came from a little bit of everything, I shrieked as I pitched off another parapet. And falling like a rock, I became an arrow, spinning and cutting through clouds so black I could see nothing. And the shrieks became screeches of laughter as the ground rushed to me. The elation built like a supernova until I was a howl of ecstasy. There was fire and adrenaline burning through my veins and I was truly reborn. Born to run. Born to fly. I had broken the confines of my humanity and now I was lovely catastrophe. I was free to be me.”
5. The Joy of Sharing:
Creating Rumi-inspired Zentangles is not only a personal journey but also an opportunity to connect with a community of like-minded souls. As we share our creations, we inspire and uplift one another, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Together, we form a collective tapestry of creativity, where our unique expressions merge to create something truly extraordinary.
In the realm of Rumi-inspired Zentangles, I discovered a world where happiness isn't something to chase but rather something I crafted with my own hands and heart. By infusing Rumi's wisdom into your artistic endeavors, you can also embark on a profound journey of self-discovery, healing, and boundless creativity. So, let's pick up our pens, immerse ourselves in the enchanting realm of Zentangles, and let Rumi's words guide us to unlock the transformative power of art.
